Manuels Mexican (Aug 2014)
13319 W. McDowell Rd., Goodyear AZ
We are on our way to Manuel's Mexican Restaurant & Cantina located at 13319 West McDowell Road in Goodyear. In the lobby we noticed the picture of Manuel and Alice Salazar, founders of this four generation family owned restaurant, along with their commitment to the finest food in a friendly atmosphere.
We chose to sit inside, rather than out on the patio and/or the bar area displaying TVs. Bowls of freshly made salsa and chips appeared, along with a greeting from owner/manager Gabe Salazar. We chose House Margaritas and
sodas, though homemade Sangria did catch our eye. As a side note, "Happy Hour' runs Monday thru Friday 4 to 7pm and Saturdays 10a-7p. All bottled beers and 16oz drafts are $3. The 16oz Original Margarita is $3.95 and $3 for a glass of wine of homemade Sangria. Single glass of wine is discounted $1 and selectd appetizers are $4. Additionally, Manuel's offers lunch specials Monday through Thursday. For those of you who prefer to eat at home, Manuel's offers catering and take our is available.
Back at out table, Gabe suggested we try the Albondigas Soup which is a homemade Mexican style soup with fresh vegetables, rice and homemade meatballs. That's right..meatballs made fresh each day! Our first appetizer was a Street Taco with beef. These miniature tacos contained soft grilled marinated steak w/ pico de gallo and cabbage. Excellent! Taquitos were our second appetizer. These golden fried tortillas were filled with finely shopped jalapeno peppers an cheese. Delicious! Don't forget to dip the taquito into the freshly made guacamole!
For main entrees, Gabe suggested "Three Amigos Enchiladas" and "Pollo Especial." He did not steer us wrong! The first entree allwed us to taste a tomatillo chicken enchilada, cream cheese spinash enchilada and a red shredded beef enchilada each in their own special sauce. The group could not agree on a favorite as they were all equally good! Next up was Pollo Special. This entree contained chunks of chicken and mild chilies wrapped in flour tortillas, deep fried and covered with green nortena sauce, mellted cheese and jalapeno cream sauce. Fabulous! Both entrees are served with beans and rice.
Now its time for desert! We just looked at Gabe and said, "Bring it on!" Hot Skillet Apple Pie with warm rum sauce. Wow!
I think we discovered the secret to Manuel's great tasting food! A combination of fresh products along with original recipes from Manuel and Alice Salazar. Gabe confirmed all products come in raw/fresh, including the chicken and produce arrives four times per week. This allows for all sauces to be made fresh each day.
Stop by Manuel's and take advantage of their summer specials, 16oz Original Margarita for $5, in celebration of 50-years in business!
